Later, rising working class standards of living encouraged the rise of the music hall and professional football teams.
The largest municipal park in Europe, the Halle Orchestra, the first repertory theatre in the country, two world class football teams; Manchester has often led the way.
In post Industrial Manchester, culture is central to a new kind of economy and Manchester is known world wide for its music, classical and popular, and sport.
