Manchester has always been a city of incomers and their contributions have made the city what it is today.
In the nineteenth century, the Jewish, Irish and Italian communities, leaving political and economic problems behind them, were attracted by Manchester 's booming economy.
They gave the local areas of Manchester their particular characteristics, Little Ireland in Chorlton by Medlock, the Jewish community in Cheetham Hill, and Little Italy in Ancoats are well known examples.
Since the Second World War, Afro-Caribbean, South Asian and African communities have made their mark in the city. Moss Side and “Curry Mile” in Rusholme are well known not just in Manchester , but outside as well.
Amongst those groups contributing to The Peopling of Manchester are:
- Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre
- Manchester University School of History
- Irish Diaspora Foundation
- Manchester Jewish Museum
