The Manchester Histories Festival is celebrating schools' involvement in
local history. Fostering a sense of pride in young people's own history and heritage is known to improve educational
attainments and we will be showcasing history projects from local schools and devoting Friday 20th March to a schools programme. The festival has been working with Manchester education specialists, and has built on successful initiatives such
as “My Manchester”, “Dig Manchester” and the “MAGPIE Project”. See the MEWAN website to find out more.
The new National Curriculum for History emphasises the importance of local history and
learning outside the classroom. The festival has encouraged schools to develop schemes of work that link with local cultural
institutions; museums, galleries and archives.
The festival is especially interested in promoting the study of local history in secondary
schools and to this end has developed schemes of work with students from Manchester Metropolitan University.
